Generation 1: George Todd and Elizabeth Paulin
George Todd (bd. ~1775) is my earliest Todd ancestor in this tree. Three possible fathers have been identified by Adrienne Todd, however none with certainty. My best guess is a George Todd (bd. 1726 in Witsome & Hilton, Berwickshire), although he would have been ~49 at the time of birth, so there may even have been an additional generation between. We know George married Elizabeth Paulin (bd ~ 1777, Ladykirk) in 1796 in Coldstream, Berwickshire (see locations). With Elizabeth we can trace back a further two generations in Ladykirk, making the Eastern Scottish Borders, and central Berwickshire in particular, the 'ancestral home' of this Todd family tree for at least 300 years. Like many of his descendants to follow, George was a Farm Labourer. George and Elizabeth had six known children: |

Of George Todd and Elizabeth Paulin Generation 2: George Todd and Jean Tully George Todd (bd. 1797) was born in Skaithmuir, a farm near Coldstream. This starts a long association of the Todd family at Skaithmuir that extends more than 150 years. George married Jane/Jean Tully (or Tullie) in Stichill in 1828, and together they had five known children: Christian Todd (bd. 1830, St. Boswells, ROX female) Elizabeth Todd (bd. 1832), Helen Todd (bd. 1834, Stichill, ROX), James Todd (bd. 1838,Stichill, ROX) Peter Todd (bd. ~1853, Stichill, ROX). George, Jane and family appeared in the 1841 census in Runningburn, a farm in the parish of Stichill. George died back where he was born, at Skaithmuir, Coldstream in 1872 at the age of 74. Generation 2: Elizabeth Todd - no known marriage, or record of death. Generation 2: Thomas Todd and Ann Waters Thomas Todd was born near Coldstream to George Todd (note like other children in this family, his mother's name is not given in the parish record on Scotland's People but assumed to be Elizabeth Paulin). Thomas was also an Agricultural Labourer. He married Ann Waters in 1826, and together they had seven known children: Margaret Todd (bd. ~1829) Elizabeth Todd (bd. ~1831) James Todd(bd. ~1833) Isabella Todd (bd. ~1836) Helen Todd (bd. ~1839) William Todd (bd. ~1840) Thomas Todd (bd. ~1850) Thomas, Ann and family appeared in the 1841 census in Langrigg, a farm in the parish of Eccles. Generation 2: John Todd and Janet Graden John Todd (born at Butterlaw, Swinton) is my direct-line ancestor. John was a Farm Servant, who at time of marriage lived at Bartle Hill (a farm in Berwickshire, SE of Eccles on the road to Brigham and the English border). He married Janet Graden (born in Ancroft, just over the border in Northumberland) in Eccles in 1826. (Janet's ancestors are reported from a Graydon family tree to have come from around Ladykirk in Scotland, despite a brief foray into England!). John and Janet had eight known children: George Todd (bd.1826, Eccles, BEW) John Todd (bd. ~1829, St. Boswells, ROX) Andrew Todd (bd. ~1829, Stichill, ROX) Ann Todd (bd. ~1831) Elizabeth Todd (bd. ~1833) Mary Todd (bd. ~1839) Janet Todd (bd. ~1844) James Todd (bd. ~1846, Stichill, ROX) John, Janet and family appear in the 1841 census at the East End of Hume. I cannot find them in the Scottish census of 1851, so they may have moved across the border at this time. They reappear in 1861 (with son James) in a private house linked to the Free Church in Langton parish, in the village of Gavinton, near Duns. John (now 56) is listed as a labourer. The Free Church Minister in 1861 was William Logan. The Free Church was formed after a breakaway from the Established Church of Scotland in 1843. This was known as the 'Disruption' associated with Thomas Chalmers and led over 400 ministers to resign from the Church of Scotland. There followed a series of unions. In 1900 the Free Church united with the United Presbyterian Church to become the United Free Church. A minority did not go into that union and continue today as the Free Church of Scotland. In 1929 the United Free Church united with the Established Church (the Church of Scotland). A minority didn't go into that union and continue today as the United Free Church. The village of Gavinton was a 'model village' planned and built by David Gavin. Gavin bought Langton Estate in 1758 and immediately set about its reorganisation. Gavin was an improving landlord and one of the pioneers of the Agricultural Revolution in the Borders. He demolished the settlement of Langton, incorporated the site into the grounds of his house, and removed the population to a new planned village, which he named "Gavintown". Generation 2: Robert Todd - no known marriage or record of death. Generation 2: James Todd - no known marriage or record of death. |

Of George Todd and Jean Tully Generation 3: Christian Todd - no known marriage or record of death. Generation 3: Elizabeth Todd and George Paulin Elizabeth married George Paulin in Duns (BEW) in 1864. Children not known. Generation 3: Helen Todd and Thomas Hardie Helen married Thomas (date unknown) and died in 1898 (age 64) in Winfield, Whitsome & Hilton. Children not known. There is a gravestone in Whitsome churchyard that reads:"Erected by Thomas Hardie in loving memory of Helen Tod his wife who died at Winfield 17 November 1898 age 64 years. Also the above Thomas Hardie who died at Oldcastles 6 January 1914 age 76 years". Generation 3: James Todd and Helen Lothian James married Helen in 1864 in Westruther (BEW). He was a ploughman. Together they had eight children: James Todd (bd. 1865, Duns, BEW) Thomas Todd (bd. 1867, Westruther, BEW) William Todd (bd. 1869, Westruther, BEW) Adam Todd (bd. 1871, Earlston, BEW) Helen Todd (bd. 1873) Peter Todd (bd. ~1876, Hutton, BEW) Jane Todd (bd. ~1878, Hutton, BEW) Walter Todd (bd. ~1880, Westruther, BEW) If Helen's birth date is correct then she had children at a late age, with Walter born when Helen was ~49 years old! James died in Duns in 1909, age 71, two years after Helen. Generation 3: Peter Todd and Mary Crombie Peter was also a ploughman, who married Mary (a domestic servant) in 1877 at West Fishwick, Hutton (BEW). They had three known children: Elizabeth Linin Todd (bd. ~1878, Ladykirk, BEW) George Todd (bd. ~1879, Edrom, BEW) Isabella Todd (bd. 1884, Langton, BEW) Elizabeth was named after Mary's mother, Elizabeth Linin. |

The relationship between Margaret and Thomas' sister-in-law Esther is not known. They had four known children: Isabella Todd (bd. ~1881, St. Boswell's, ROX) Anna Todd (bd. 1886, Kelso, ROX) John C. Of John Todd and Janet Graden Generation 3: George Todd and Ann Brodie Renton George Todd (my Great Great Grandfather) married his first wife Ann Renton in 1858 in Langton. Seven months later(!) their first daughter Sarah was born. George had various agricultural jobs including labourer, cattleman and ploughman. With Ann he had eight known children, including twin girls: Sarah Todd (bd. 1858, Langton, BEW) Janet Todd (bd. 1860, Langton, BEW) John Todd (bd. 1861, Greenlaw, BEW) George Todd (bd. 1863 Greenlaw, BEW) Margaret Todd (bd. 1864, Greenlaw, BEW) Mary-Ann Todd (bd. 1864, Greenlaw, BEW) Helen Todd (bd. 1867, Greenlaw, BEW) Alexander Todd (bd. 1869, Hume, BEW) Ann died of stomach cancer, age 34, at Hume Orchard a week after the birth of Alexander. This left George with 8 children under 11. Generation 3: George Todd and Mary Wood In 1870, a year after Ann's death, George (age 43) married Mary Wood (age 28) (my Great Great Grandmother). Mary was an agricultural labourer. Her father is not known, however her mother married her stepfather when she was eight. For Mary to marry a man 15 years older, and with 8 kids seems a big step - however the birth of George and Mary's first child six months later perhaps explains part of the reason! George and Mary went on to have eight known children (giving George a total of 16!). James Todd (bd. 1871, Hume, BEW) Andrew Todd (bd. 1872, Hume, BEW) Agnes Todd (bd. 1873, Hume, BEW) Elizabeth Todd (bd. 1875 Hume, BEW) William Wilson Todd (bd. 1877, Makerston, ROX) Robert Todd (bd. 1879, Makerston, ROX) Elspeth Todd (bd. 1881, Channelkirk, BEW) Peter Todd (bd. ~1884, Channelkirk, BEW) George died at Skaithmuir in 1899, age 72. Mary survived until 1913, where she died (age 71) at her daughter Elizabeth's home at the suitably-named Todhillrig, a neighbouring farm to Skaithmuir. Generation 3: John Todd and Margaret Darling No record of John and Margaret's marriage, about 1850. John and children appear at Auchencrow Mains Farm, Coldingham in the 1861 census, with Margaret's sister-in-law Janet Darling. The family moved, with the older children to Northumberland and appear in Shipley & Stead, Eglingham in 1871, at Lesbury, Nr. Alnwick in 1881, at Hadston(e), Morpeth in 1891 and East Chevington, Bedlington, Morpeth in 1901. His first wife was Eleanor, and together they had five known children: Mary-Ann Todd (bd. 1857) John Todd (bd. 1860, Coldingham, BEW) Alison Todd (bd. 1861) Elizabeth Todd (bd. 1864) Thomasina Todd (bd. 1866) Eleanor died in 1866 (age ~34), possibly during/after childbirth. No known marriage, however George Todd Simpson is described as son on her death certificate. This is likely to be the same George Simpson listed as son of her sister Mary-Ann. Ilene Todd reports that James was born two days after the family moved to Chain Bridge Farm, Melrose. Andrew died in 1945 of heart failure, age 72, at Mill Cottage, Melrose, where his occupation was listed as a haulage contractor. Informant was son James, who was then living at Spittal, Northumberland. Elizabeth lived until 1958 (age ~82). Of Andrew Todd and Eleanor Weatherston Generation 4: Mary Ann Todd - no known marriage, or record of death. Generation 4: John Todd and Isabella Laidlaw John was an agricultural labourer/ploughman at Borthwickshiels, Roberton when he married Isabella Laidlaw, also an agricultural labourer, at her home in Butchercote, Mertoun. Although Elizabeth Lizester (Litster) is listed as mother at marriage, John's real mother was probably Eleanor Weatherston who died when John was ~6 years of age. John's father, Andrew married Elizabeth when John was ~7 years of age. Isabella had an illegitimate son, John, who was 7 when she married, who took the surname Todd. The family later moved to Airhouse, Channelkirk, Berwickshire, and by 1901 the family was at Garvald, near Haddington in East Lothian. They had a further six children together: John Barns Todd (bd. 1877) Andrew Todd (bd. ~1888, Channelkirk, BEW) James Todd (bd. ~1889, Channelkirk, BEW) Elizabeth (Betsy) Todd (bd. 1891, Channelkirk, BEW) George Todd (bd. 1894) Thomas Todd (bd. ~1896, Channelkirk, BEW) John Todd (bd. ~1898, Glasdmuir, E. LOTHIAN) There is a death certificate for a John Todd, married to Isabella Laidlaw, dated 1927, at Kirknewton, West Lothian. However this lists John's mother as Helen Todd (m.s. Brown), so it may be a different couple, or his mother's name was wrongly recorded. Generation 4: Alison Todd - no known marriage, or record of death. Generation 4: Elizabeth Todd - no known marriage, or record of death. Generation 4: Thomasina Todd - no known marriage, or record of death. However Andrew died five days before their marriage, aged only four months. Both George and Mary Ann were agricultural labourers, and they married in Ednam in 1906. No other children are known. Generation 4: Charles Todd - no known marriage, or record of death. Generation 4: Alexander Todd - no known marriage, or record of death. |
